MDP's Favorite Met Gala 2022 Looks

Monday's Met Gala made its big return to its original night in May this year with plenty of fashion hits and misses. With the theme being, “Gilded Glamour” there was a large space for interpretation which can always be fun and interesting.

The theme was inspired by the New York’s Gilded Age which was from 1870 to 1890, emphasizing extravagance, industrialization, very formal wear and featured fabrics such as silk, fringe, satin, velvet and more. Initially, I was reluctant to write on the big fashion night because I was uncertain of what to make of the looks in terms of how they conveyed the theme.

Understanding the theme is important and skillfully, portraying it is the major task for the night. It's not easy but faithful fashion attendees like Sarah Jessica Parker and Rihanna always seem to nail the fashion assignment.

This year, some people took the theme head on and even added a modern spin, others took on the literal interpretation and the rest sort of did their own thing. Although there was some looks I really liked, the looks below are my favorite because they really captured the heart of the theme in a way that seemed effortless while looking fabulous.

The satin fabric and rose pink and orange tones popped against the shimmering gold tile panels featured on the bodice of the dress. The gold made it feel very modern but still very classic. The volume of the train and bow perfectly captured the theme in a literal sense and added the the final touch of extravagence. But it was the dramatic transformation on the carpet that took this dress to the beloved-Met-Gala-level that you expect and love to see.

The green and copper transformation was just as stunning as the rose pink, gold and copper tones.  According to E!'s Zanna Roberts Rass, the green side of the dress featured constellations seen on the ceiling of the Grand Central Terminal in NYC. Dramatic and gorgeous!

Ironically, the talented artist and actress will be playing the iconic Josephine Baker in A24's new upcoming series. And her look was very reminiscent of Baker's dazzle and sparkle in her head-to-toe-beaded Ralph Lauren gown. It featured the colors, black and white that Monae often wears and was impactful, without having doing too much. It was statement on its own in a sea of gowns.

With all the trains, bows and drama on the carpet, this gown was so different than anything else.  It was  unexpected to me. The flowy, light train cascaded effortlessly around Smith with each pose she made, her makeup was perfection and even with her baring plenty of skin, the dress had as much presence and elegance as a large ball gown. I couldn't imagine  anyone else wearing this Gucci dress. This is how you do your first Met Gala. She was truly exceptional.

The pale pink, opera gloves and the volume in the sleeves just really spoke for the theme. It was delicate and extravagant in a modest and perfect way. It was also great to see her choose not to wear a necklace, accessorize with a dainty chandelier earring and wear her hair up, slicked back. I loved the simplicity and how true to the theme the entire look was.

Baring skin, especially with such a formal theme can go many ways but the dramatic and spot-on head piece, paired with the velvet volume and body of the two-piece gown was everything. Everything made sense. It was the formal wear and drama you want to see but with a modern touch that was done so well. Normani truly bodied this look!

Yai stunned in this sequin fuchsia gown with cut-outs by Michael Kors Collection. It's no wonder she also made Vogue's best dressed list for the event. The cut-outs made it a very now moment but the fushcia sequin really popped against her skin and shimmered as it seemed to float on the carpet. It was a dream. Her striking, model features further made her look so amazing!
