Looking Back: Favorite 2013 look

As 2013 comes to a close, I found myself reflecting back on some of my favorite fashion looks. This vintage navy blue dress from Winkleman's made me feel like a star at Hour Detroit's Best of Detroit event in June of this year. The mesh cut-outs also made it on trend with the season. I paired the look with my Enzo Angiolini shoes and Charter's Club jeweler to accessorize. I loved it! I look forward to keeping it fashionable and glamorous in the new year. What's one of your favorite looks from this year?

New Year's 2013 Attire

It is all about the sparkle and glam for ringing in the new year. And it's the last time to look fab before the old year closes and a new year begins. Bring in the new year with absolute style! Personally, I find the LBD or any black dress, paired with the right accessories a slam dunk for New Year's Eve. It's timeless, effortless, and screams glamour. Here a few picks of some LBDs that look great and easy to doll up for the occasion, courtesy of Polyvore. (Remember it's a new year so you can wear any cocktail or dressy ensemble you wish. A splash of color is sure to look beautiful for the New Year's too. Ultimately, the goal is to be stylish, have fun, and to be your most fashionable when the ball drops at midnight!)

DIA and Detroit Garment Guild hosts Samurai: Beyond the Sword competition

The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) has partnered up with the Detroit Garment Group Guild (DG3), to host a competition geared towards local fashion designers interested in participating in the DIA’s upcoming  exhibition, Samurai: Beyond the Sword exhibition.  The exhibition opens March 9, 2014.

Designers interesting in participating are asked to create a complete outfit that’s inspired by the Samurai exhibition. In addition, designers need to submit an electronic portfolio of their work of at least 10 designs to Karen Buscemi, the President of the DG3 at detroitgarmentgroup@gmail.com.  Entries are due  by January 31. Preference will be given to designers from the tri-county area and to those with a demonstrated history of high-quality work.

The DG3 will select 10 designers to tour the exhibition and to display their Samurai-inspired outfits. DG3 will cover the cost of the materials for bringing these innovative ensembles to life. Lastly, the designers will post blogs and/or vlogs while they are creating their outfits for the exhibition.

The finished  fashion exhibition  looks will also be displayed at three community locations for local exhibitions for a fashion show. One  winner will be selected by the community and will receive a special prize. The winner will be announced during the fashion show.

Designers will be notified by February 14 if they have been chosen or not for the exhibition. For more information on this competition and the Samurai: Beyond the Sword exhibition, visit http://www.detroitgarmentgroup.org/.

This is the season and year for warm, stylish outerwear and therefore it’s important to be prepared for the temperature drop. Here are six outwear styles a fashionista should have in her closet for the chaging season.

1) Leather Jacket
A leather jacket is a seasonal staple. Don’t have one? Get one!

2) Capes
Capes are dramatic and fiercely, stylish. They can add as little or as much as warmth as you wish during the season. They are not easy to find but are totally worth the shopping trip!

3)Overcoat
Overcoats are trending this season. They are perfect for the extra cold days and come in assortment of colors.

4) Peacoat
Peacoats are a great alternative to the leather coat and versatile for work and play during after hours.

5) Down/ Parka Coat
A down coat or parka must be in your closet when you live in Michigan. After all a fashionista can not let a little or ton of snow get in her way. Invest in at least two reliable, fashionable down or parka coats for the season. It will be your best friend for the winter!

NYFW 2014 collection review: Christian Siriano

Christian Siriano’s Spring 2014 collection can best be described as  beautiful, airy, and colorful. The collection implemented so many different elements for the spring that included:  sheer, a unique, floral water paint pattern,  a black and white houndstooth-like pattern, and  a mixture of pastel and bright colors (white, tangerine orange, yellow and turquoise).

The collection popped with a fresh , lightness that is the essence of spring.  Siriano’s collection also highlighted a chic ,feminine style for the day and an ultra classy, sophisticated look for the evening. Christian Siriano’s Spring 2014 collection was an impressive variety of styles and had an elegant essence carried throughout each and every look.

There's more of NYFW Spring 2014 designer collections to look forward to this week. Also, catch a few more of my reviews during this month for NYFW. Happy Fashion Month!
