DIA and Detroit Garment Guild hosts Samurai: Beyond the Sword competition

The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) has partnered up with the Detroit Garment Group Guild (DG3), to host a competition geared towards local fashion designers interested in participating in the DIA’s upcoming  exhibition, Samurai: Beyond the Sword exhibition.  The exhibition opens March 9, 2014.

Designers interesting in participating are asked to create a complete outfit that’s inspired by the Samurai exhibition. In addition, designers need to submit an electronic portfolio of their work of at least 10 designs to Karen Buscemi, the President of the DG3 at detroitgarmentgroup@gmail.com.  Entries are due  by January 31. Preference will be given to designers from the tri-county area and to those with a demonstrated history of high-quality work.

The DG3 will select 10 designers to tour the exhibition and to display their Samurai-inspired outfits. DG3 will cover the cost of the materials for bringing these innovative ensembles to life. Lastly, the designers will post blogs and/or vlogs while they are creating their outfits for the exhibition.

The finished  fashion exhibition  looks will also be displayed at three community locations for local exhibitions for a fashion show. One  winner will be selected by the community and will receive a special prize. The winner will be announced during the fashion show.

Designers will be notified by February 14 if they have been chosen or not for the exhibition. For more information on this competition and the Samurai: Beyond the Sword exhibition, visit http://www.detroitgarmentgroup.org/.
