The Detroit International Jazz Festival Sep.4-7

Attention jazz lovers! Celebrate 30 years of jazz at the Detroit International Jazz Festival this labor day weekend in downtown Detroit. The grand jazz affair will stretch from Hart Plaza to Campus Maritus with 100 acts, set to perform. The Clark Sisters, John Patitucci and Danilo Perez, the Dave Brubeck Quartet, Christian McBride , The Heath Brothers, and the Clayton Brothers Quintet are among the many musical talents that will grace the five stages during the four day event. The festival will also include “Gospel Monday”, giant festival puppets, and fireworks. Best of all, the entire festival is free to the public! Michigan State Fair August 28 - September 7

Grab some friends and family and head down to this year’s Michigan State Fair. As always, the Fair promises plenty of entertainment, fun, and rides for all to enjoy all day and night. General admission is $10.00 and $5.00 for children (3 -12 years old) and seniors (62 years of age and older).Children under two years are free. Parking is $7.00 per vehicle. Rides are pay one price all day and night. Rides are $22.00 Monday through Friday and $25.00 Saturday through Sunday and Labor Day. The fair is located at the corner of Eight Mile Road and Woodward Avenue in Detroit - two miles from I-75, three miles from I-696, and eight miles from I-94. The Michigan Renaissance Festival August 22-October 2

The Michigan Renaissance Festival is back! Gather the family and head on down for a weekend of outdoor activities. The festival is opened on the weekends and Labor Day until October 2. On August 28 and 29, join in on the US Canadian Highland Heavy Games. There will be a Caber Toss, Stone Put, and Scottish Dance Competition. There will also be a Bagpipe Blowout competition and a Celtic village that teaches guests about Scottish heritage. Tickets are $18.95 for adults, $9.95 for children, and $16.95 for student and seniors. The Grand Prix Shakedown:8k Race and 1 Mile Walk


Grab those running shoes and get ready, get set…..go! The Grand Prix Shakedown:8k Race and 1 Mile Walk is here. The walk and race will take place at the scenic Belle Isle in downtown Detroit, August 25. The 1-Mile “Family Fun Walk” begins at 6p.m. while the 8K begins at 7p.m. There will be a DJ, free food and drinks, a certified USATF Course, and a chip-timed race. Participants can also enter for the chance to win two free airline tickets. Kids under the age of 12 are free. A 100% of the walk’s proceeds goes toward the program, 2-1-1 On the Go! 2-1-1 On the Go! is a program through United Way of Southeastern Michigan's 2-1-1 information and referral service that helps the homeless get off the street or out of the shelters and into full-time employment and permanent housing. Smooth Sailing Dinner Cruise

5th Annual Smooth Sailing Comedy Dinner Cruise
Kick back and relax to an evening of delicious food and comedic entertainment while sailing along the Detroit river. The Detroit Princess Boat is having its 5th Annual Smooth Sailing Comedy Dinner Cruise August 22, 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm. The cruise will include a buffet of of Prime Rib, Chicken Florentine, Teriyaki Grilled Salmon, Chipotle Apricot Glazed Pork Chops and Vegetarian Lasagna with sides of Potato Dauphinoise and other scrumptious sides.Assorted salads, dinner rolls ,and dessert will also be served. A cash bar will be avaiable for drinks. The comedic show will be hosted by fellow Detroiter and Star Search's 2003 comedy winner, Horace H.B Sanders.

Primary election results are in!

Despite a low voter turnout, the primary elections for Detroit City Council and mayor signaled major changes for the city, pushing out the old for the new. Mayor, Dave Bing captured a first place victory with 74% of the votes.His challenger Tom Barrow came in second with 11% of the votes. Former radio personality and Fox 2 News anchor, Charles Pugh also came as a great visitor in his race for city council. Pugh is among the leading 18 individuals that will run in November for the nine council city seats. Ken Cockrel Jr. came in second for the highest number of votes for council.
A total of 168 names appeared on City Council ballot but Tuesday elections narrowed downy 18 of those names (including Pugh the top finishers in the race. Although Monica Conyers appeared n the ballot she was not a valid candidate for council seat due to her recent bribery plea.
Incumbent, Maratha Reeves was not among the 18 names chosen by voters to run for City Council in November this will be her last term.Flat Rock, Dearborn, Hamtramck, Ecorse, Sterling Heights, and Northville Township also held elections Tuesday.
